Description of a new line of artwork
Erwin Rios – Quo vadis, socially critical art
One topic that is particularly close to my heart and that finds expression in the series Quo vadis is involuntary and voluntary migration; be it political or economic, as well as integration in the broadest sense.
I am shaken by many tragic fates of people fleeing war or ill-treatment in the most difficult conditions. They are traumatized, tortured, sick … They are looking for a place to live, where they are treated humanely, where they experience safety and security, maybe once again they can gain confidence in life. Many dreams and hopes come true, but many experience more inhumanity, unworthy living conditions or even violence.
Quo vadis (socially critical art) is dedicated to
… all people who are exposed to racism, violence, war, hunger … those who are fleeing
… all people who get involved with the unscrupulous smugglers in the hope of a better life in peace.
… all the deleted livelihoods, lost hopes … in the daily tragedies.
But Quo vadis also speaks about those who are blessed by faith and can start a new life in safety and confidence; now facing new challenges with fundamentally different cultural and social backgrounds.
Quo vadis is socially critical art because it aims to draw the general public’s attention to the solution of the problem. I want to throw the question in the room: What can our society do to at least guarantee everyone’s basic rights? And last but not least: what can each individual do…

Erwin Rios – Serie Quo vadis, sozialkritische Kunst
