Inspiration (from Latin inspirare, meaning “to breathe”) is an unconscious surge of creativity in an artistic endeavor.
Inspiration is often placed in the unconscious mind, surreal artists have looked for this form of inspiration by turning to dream diaries and automatic typing. The theory of inspiration indirectly repeated the other side of the romantic notion of inspiration, suggesting that the artist is attuned to something impersonal, something outside of individual experience.
In modern psychology, inspiration is generally viewed as an entirely internal process. Yet, in any view, be it empiric or mystical, inspiration is inherently out of control.
What inspires artists? Inspiration simply means gathering a new idea, a surge of unexpected breath, a powerful force that makes the artist helpless and unaware of its origin. Generally, it refers not to the sheer sudden originality, but to the dizzying and stunning blow of a new idea that the recipient may not be able to explain.
