Wendy Cohen was born in Cape Town, South Africa but presently resides in Sydney, Australia. She attended the National Art School in Sydney, graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 2015 and a Master of Fine Arts in 2017. She has exhibited in joint and group exhibitions as well as twice in The Other Art Fair in Sydney. She has also exhibited in Art Basel, Miami, the New York Art Fair, San Diego Art Fair and group exhibition in Chelsea, New York.
Wendy’s practice focuses on the relationship of colour, shape, line and form with the relationship of natural and urban surroundings that are communicated in a painterly language. By integrating shapes into a cohesive body of colours and forms in conjunction with collage elements, flowing ideas are arbitrarily manifested that bring attention to the brushstrokes, mark-making, and the materials on the surface of each painting. With a sense of curiosity, exploration and discovery, a lighthearted genre is created that results in spontaneous mark-making as well as an exciting interplay between the shapes, forms and colours imbued with the ebb and flow of textured brush strokes and the alchemy of a variation of colour. Wendy interprets colour with the sound of the soul as being the transcendental essence of music to give her paintings a lyrical expression that captures the beauty of creation as well as her cultural influences. Observation, intuition and imagination are key to Wendy’s process as she responds to the interconnection of the world, but most importantly she welcomes the viewer to participate in the mystery and wonderment of her paintings translated onto the canvas with a syncopated rhythm and beat.
