Wendy Cohen – Interview, Award or distinction

Wendy Cohen – Interview. Painting is my passion as it enables me to evoke my curious lighthearted inner child and maintain a sense of playfulness, wonderment and humour in my life.

Our culture determines that as we grow older, play is not viewed in a positive light and is dominated by seriousness. Artists are continually influenced by each other and the environment and I would ask them if they would be motivated to take risks and to not remain in a comfort zone and if they would approach painting experimentally and with a sense of freedom.

I am inspired by the ebb and flow of the creative process and I associate it with a sense of exploration and discovery together observation, intuition and imagination.
The most interesting statement I have heard about my work that it is original, creative and has an endless sense of freedom of expression.

I convey my own fetish, poetry and harmonious rhythm to the paint brush developing playful imagery an emotive and inventive sensibility.

My paintings are a visual celebration that invites the viewer to release the mind’s critical mechanism and engage in the joy of my oeuvre as the display of hues, shapes, colours, light and shadows create a playful vibrant freedom of expression in an abstracted genre.

My practice as grown and transformed over time as I have become confident in trusting my curiosity and courage in exploration and discovery to create a lyrical genre that results in spontaneous mark making together with an exciting interplay between shapes, forms, lines and colours imbued with textured brushstrokes and the alchemy of a variation of colours.

I am a synesthet as in creativity I have realised that the stimulus of sound is not only impacted by what we hear but also what we feel, as feelings are the vibrational sound of the soul.

For this reason, I give my paintings names that relate to movement, colour and anything quirky as the colour stimulus evokes the sensatiion of another, as in the hearing of a sound that produces the visualization of colour.

I talk the key process of my practice and that I respond to the interconnection of the world but most importantly I welcome the viewer to participate in the mystery and wonderment of my paintings translated onto the canvas with a syncopated rhythm and beat.
