Laila Terra – Solo Exhibition at Espaço Fidalga. São Paulo Brazil – 2019
“Red Black Blue Brown Yellow Crimson Green Orange Purple Pink Violet White White White White White White White”
First solo exhibition by artist Laila Terra since Euridice at Paço das Artes in 2014, “Red Black Blue Brown …” lends some qualities of Temporary Autonomous Zones (TAZ), described by author Hakim Bey. Talking to the search for freedom, Laila proposes, in the line of Euridice, an unfolding of her questions about the traditional definitions and processes of making art, the verticality of her organization and, by extension, of society as a whole. Formally, “Red Black Blue Brown ..” offers a counter-current proposal of the return of hyper-realism in painting and the virtuosity of classic Brazilian printmaking, through an outline of the artist’s thought and desire for painting, through abstraction, the graphic plane, and the chromatic perception.
In the first series of works derived from the basic colors of the Pantone palette; the artist proposes a definition of the painter reduced to its essence, that is, the application of paint on a support, in this case, the application of typographic paint on galvanized steel sheets. As part of the operation, Laila Terra deconstructs the engraving process at the same time by eliminating the matrix and delimiting the chromatic spaces with masking tape. In the compositions, the colored fields are marked by zones of black and gray tones, suggesting possible fragments of landscapes in which formal resolution takes the place of representation. In the same way, in the series of woodcuts exposed in the last room, the artist repeats her process of rupture and redefinition of the technique, working repetitively on the same support with a single matrix changed with each pass. The architectural thought that permeates his production finally led Laila to include in the exhibition space, a set of three cubic sculptures, made of wood and earth, whose colors draw patterns.
