BioKatie Willes is an emerging artist who paints intuitively. Always an art lover, Katie discovered her passion for creating colorful expressive art in her 40’s. Her fearless foray into exhibiting her work quickly led to a commitment to build an artistic career.
Self-taught, Katie relies on her ability to tap into her unconscious mind, letting the creative process unfold, rather than force an outcome. She credits the success of this process with decades of cultivated mindfulness and her experienced sense of color and design. Her art truly reflects her personality: chaos cultivated into calm.
Highly traveled from her wandering childhood and nomadic early adulthood, Katie’s art education came from visiting the museums of the world. She finds inspiration in her travels: from the exotic calligraphic script of the Middle East, or patterns found in Byzantine mosaics in Sicily, to the pedestrian juxtaposition of color and pattern in an urban skyline, or graffiti in the inner city; all feed her subconscious and influence her style.
Art StatementArt is an exploration of the spirit. When I paint, I connect to something deep within, beyond conscious thought. I believe this is my true soul. Painting is a way for me to deeply explore my soul’s existence, and get to know the true me beyond this body’s sleeve. I paint to find myself.
I’m a process painter. I start a painting by playing with my materials, usually doodles or scribbles with charcoal or crayon. I work in layers, letting things build up or peek through, sometimes scraping back. I rely heavily on my connection to my subconscious, trying to stay out of my head and stay in creative flow. I’ll step back and analyze, then jump right back into that mindset. Because so much of what I paint is an expression of my deepest self, a big part of my process is mental as well. Meditation and mindfulness keep my head free from distractions and roadblocks and keep me connected to the intuition that guides my work.
