Interview with Tobias Tovera

17 April 2020 Action Painting Artists' Blog Color Field Painting Post-painterly Abstraction Process Painting

O-A: What is art to you?

Tobias Tovera: I think art is a reflection of our humankind. I am drawn to art that embodies ritual, process, and evokes emotion, spirit, and connection.

O-A: What wouldn’t you do without art? What did you discover, achieve with it? Art is creation.

Tobias Tovera: I continue to discover more and more about myself and the world around me through my art practice.
.

O-A: If a person, artist or not, influenced you, what kind of question would you ask him/her?

Tobias Tovera: I would ask what the biggest turning point in his art practice was and how that affected his art. What did he enjoy most about his process and was he in love with his work.

O-A: Who or what inspired you artistically; a person, artist, event, experience…

Tobias Tovera: Seeing Mark Rothko’s work in person. Experiencing the visual alchemy of the Icelandic landscape. Finding my voice as an artist.
.

O-A: How do you search for inspiration and themes for your work?

Tobias Tovera: I find inspiration in nature, meditation, and materials that are transformative.

O-A: How has your art changed over time? Why?

Tobias Tovera: Art changes over time as I evolve and as the world evolves… we continue to awaken into a deeper truth.
.

O-A: Are you a synesthete?

Tobias Tovera: I am not a synesthete, though I do love art that stimulates all of the senses in a way that is harmonic and beautiful.

O-A: What names do you give your artworks?

Tobias Tovera: The names of my works are inspired by nature, science, and the occult.

O-A: What do you usually talk about with your collectors?

Tobias Tovera: My process, materials and concepts that encompass my art practice.
